Nature Trails is a Mumbai, India based company. It operates resorts and campsites at 5 locations in Maharashtra. It is in the business for the last 20 years.

Its mission is “To identify unexplored locations having nature and adventure tourism potential, to provide there tourist facilities of a pre defined standard and to transform them into destinations, profitably”.

About the Location

Tapola is a small market town on the backwaters of River Koyna near Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra, India. The road ends at Tapola. It is at an altitude of 2659 ft above sea level. Beyond the market is a fantastic water body culminating 70 kms later in the massive Koyna Nagar dam and hydro electric Project. While climbing down the spiraling ghat from Mahabaleshwar to reach Tapola, you wonder whether you are saying goodbye to the cool and pleasant climate of Mahabaleshwar. But you are pleasantly surprised when you stay at the camp. The weather here is always excellent due to the presence of the huge water body.

When the dam at Koyna Nagar was built in the 60’s, a lot of the local population was displaced causing widespread resentment and loss of farmlands. However over the last 40 years a new water based economy has developed due to the abundance of the water.

One silver lining of the whole process was the beautiful virgin Koyna Sanctuary. This pristine forest is teeming with Bison, Wild Boar, Leopard and plenty of other wild animals. Being un-accessible by road has left much of its virginity intact.

Vasota fort is another superb trek in the area passing through virgin forests.

Facilities
Nature Trails have established a superb river camp at Village Ahir. Ahir is accessible only by boat from Tapola (10 minutes). The location of the camp is spectacular with beautiful lake views throughout. It’s a full service tented camp providing a great back to nature experience. This means that there is no electricity at the camp. The weather is such that fans and a/cs are not needed even in summer. The evening lighting is taken care of using gaslights. There is no permanent construction or structure in the camp. Tourists/ Guest stay in the superb tents. There are proper flush toilets and baths with 24 hours running water. The dining tables in the dining area are set with stone leftover from the building of the adjacent temple. The camp is as ecofriendly as can be.

The camp is closed during the monsoon season (June to September) and the land on which the camp stands is used for agriculture.

Activities

Kayaking and Canoeing is the major adventure activity here. Kayaking and canoeing is fairly easy yet requires some technique and a days time to master. The long but placid water body at Tapola makes it an ideal place to learn and enjoy the sport.

Windsurfing is an activity that needs a trainer and some hard practice. Trained volunteers can teach you to windsurf over 2 –3 days.

Angling and Fishing are both great leisure activities you could do at the lake.

Water Scooter Expeditions are thrilling rides even your kids can enjoy. You could even ride all the way to nearby Vasota fort, a 40 minutes thrilling ride where you’ll see the unimaginable beauty of Tapola and its surroundings. This is ride is so scenic that you will have to pinch yourself about being in Maharastra and not in Kashmir

Rappelling, valley crossing and trekking and Mountain Biking,

Nature Trails trademark activities can be done in Tapola too. Trekking through the virgin forest in the Vasota wildlife sanctuary can be an enriching experience with a trained guide in tow.

Getting There and Away

From Mahabaleshwar take the Tapola Road to reach Tapola.
At Tapola park your car/ vehicle in the parking lot of the Tapola Boat Club
Hire a boat to go to Village Ahir across the river. At Ahir walk up to spot the entrance to the camp.

1. All rates in Rs per person per night inclusive of all meals (1BF, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner, one session of Mountain Biking and Kayaking, complimentary pick up and drop from Tapola Boat Club)

2. 6% Luxury Tax applicable on above package.

• Windsurfing Rs 1350 per person per day extra inclusive of Equipment and Instructor charges
