Wiring a Pentrair SuperFlo High Performance Pool Pump?
Hi, we just bought a brand new 3/4 Pentair inground pool pump and I need to know how to install the wiring to the pump. We fixed it so that it would run on 115 watts of electricity.
There are 2 possible answers here:
1) Since you don’t seem to know your Amps from the hole in the ground you swim in, hire a qualified, licensed electrical contractor to install the pump for you.
2) I owe you an apology; you are a genius. You have just created the world’s first .958 Volt pool pump (assuming you are using 120 Volts as you power source).
“Fixing” the pump to run on 115 Volts is probably what you meant; if the Manufacturer showed how to do this in their Instructions, then you are fine (as long as you did it correctly, and the pump is listed for use at that voltage). Pool pumps are listed to UL Standard 1081. If the pump does not have the Mark of a Third Party Independent Testing Agency showing it to be listed to US (NOT Canadian) Standards, you better get a new pump, anyway. A pump with only a CSA Mark cannot be used in the US (and, a lot of Pentair pumps lack a US Approved Mark).
Do yourself a favor, and hire a pro to install the pump; talk to your local Building Official for advice about the listing requirements for pool pumps. (Many pumps will have a statement on the Nameplate that says something to the effect of “1081 rated pump” – without a listing agency’s Mark, this means nothing.) There are far too many specific requirements in NEC Article 680 to go about explaining how to install a pump safely to even attempt it here. [In fact, I failed three pool inspections last week (and 2 already this week) & they were all done by licensed guys who didn't understand a lot of this Article - & it's not that complicated – just different.]
Let’s just agree that water & electricity are not a healthy mix under any circumstances; and refer to NEC Article 90.1 (C) that basically tells you that the Code Book is not a “Do-it-Yourself” manual. Be safe; enjoy your pool – hire a pro.
