How do you fish for Crappie from the shore of a lake/pond?
How do you use a crappie jig from the shore? Do I need a bobber? What kind? What crappie jig should I use for shore fishing?
Any other methods? I already know about crappie powerbait.
Here are two ways that will produce crappie for you from the bank. In the early spring when the crappie are spawning, everyone will leave the boats and fish from the bank. The crappie will be in inches of water and usually between the bushes and the bank tight against the bushes or around the small stickups. The favorite way ( and the best way) to fish for them when they are spawning is to use a 10-12 foot pole with a jig with about 3 foot of line from you pole. This will allow you to get under the limbs and bushes and swim the jig around every structure close to the banks and bushes.This is the single most effective way to fish for spawning crappies on my area lakes and bayous. The other method is to use a spin cast or spinning reel with a slip cork and have it set to the depth the crappie are holding at. Usually it will be by stickups in the water or where the water drops off at to a deeper depth and fish the drop offs. You cast the jig out and (use a small sinker about 6 inches above the jig to get the jig down. Then let it sink and set for a few seconds and you twitch the line and “pop” the cork slightly to give some movement to your jig.After each twitch let it sit for a few seconds before twitching it again. When the crappie hits the jig, it will disappear from sight. Set the hook with a flip of the wrist. A crappie’s mouth is fragile and the hook will tear out if the hook set is too hard. I like to use the small jig heads and use the tube tails. Different colors will work at different times but the black and chartreuse will usually produce good. Learn these two methods of crappie fishing and you will always have fish for dinner. Good luck!
