Pool Care: Two days in a row I have shocked my pool in the evening.?
By 2pm the next day my pool registers no free chlorine on the dip stick. I have had this pool 6 years and have NEVER had the shock dissipate this rapidly. My pool holds 8,500 gallons and I use a package of shock for 10,000 gallons. I ran the filter only one hour after adding. It hasn’t been any hotter than any other year. I have used two different type of shock thinking maybe the first packs shelf time had passed. The pool doesn’t even smell like chlorine! (I also have a floating chlorinator) I was hoping the shock when bring it up to therapeutic level. This is an above ground non-lined SPLASH pool. (Called soft sided) All other pool levels PH etc are in normal limits. It is 4X13X21
But if it were high you would think I would smell it! I have been swimming, my eyes don’t burn, my skin isn’t dry! I will get the other test kit as well.
Try alternating your method of testing. If you can get liquid indicators with a test kit, they are much more reliable than a dip stick.
Alternately, you can try adding double the amount of chlorine and seeing if that works.
Also, and this may sound weird, but if there’s too much chlorine in the pool it can sometimes give you misleading readings. At the community pool I manage, we had a problem where we were getting a reading of zero, but there was almost 10ppm worth of chlorine in the pool. It should have been at 3.
But yeah, best advice is to get a new test kit.
