Crane & Driver (Tm) The Ultimate Guide: Water Protection For Crane Electronics
Throughout our 30 years in the business we have seen a lot of crane electronic water damage that could have been easily prevented. Unfortunately water and electronics just don’t mix.
Though we are always thankful for the business we also wanted to try and save our clients the headache, down time, and cost of this type of damage by giving our thoughts on some simple preventative maintenance steps.
Here is a list of some of the most common, easily prevented, issues we see.
1. Intensive POWER WASHING of the crane electronic components. Most electronic components are rated to the European standard “IP16” for spray water resistance. Power Washing however is much more pressure than simple spray washing. Think of what a power washer will do to the deck in your yard, versus what a garden hose will do. When pressure cleaning your crane, try to avoid electronic components as much as possible.
2. Rain or snow ingress into the cabin through an OPEN WINDOW. This can easily cause console damage.
3. Cable STRAIN RELIEFs usually provide direct access to enclosures with many electric components. Reused or insufficiently tightened/wrong diameter strain reliefs provide an easy space for water to flow through. A strain relief should only be used once. If a cable is replaced, we strongly recommend replacing the strain relief also. Be careful to fully tighten the strain relief down without squashing it through the cap, and always make sure you have the right diameter stain relief for the cable you are using.
4. A WORN rubber gasket. We recommend gasket replacement as part of a regular preventative maintenance plan.
5. Lids that are “CRANKED DOWN.” Most rubber gaskets will actually loose their sealing effect if tightened down too much or unevenly. This is very common in junction boxes.
