Lifter problem?

My older brothers father truck is a 1990 f150 4X4 with 108,000
straight six

The only thing wrong is we think it’s a stuck lifter

What happens:

When you idle nothing happens, but when you give it gas it goes tick tick tick tick tick and so on but when idling nothing. So, is it a

Stuck Lifter

or a Ticking lifter( when the valve hits the valve covers

A lifter is like a shock absorber between the cam and the push rods. A stuck lifter just means that it has no “give” in it. When it is solid it will make that ticking noise your talking about. You could also have…
-a bent push rod
-a broken or out of adjustment rocker arm
-a bad valve spring
I would pull off the valve cover first and inspect and move all the rocker arms and see if there is excess play in any. Next start the engine with the valve cover off (it would be better with a access cover so you don’t lose oil) and watch all the rocker arms move I bet you’ll see the problem. A lot of times a locked up lifter will restrict oil to that push rod. Good Luck.

Also I didn’t want to suggest but the first answer was very good about trans fluid, I have also used diesel fuel, but either way like they said be very cautious.
