When we say the word ‘Water’ it brings in a different sensation each time we think of it at different times depending upon the quantity of water we necessitate. At times you might feel just disgusted with even the notion of water if you have just had a lot of water on the other hand if it has been a couple of hours since you last had water you might be yearning for water and if it would have been a day since you last had water you might even be dreaming of water. It gives life to all and yet takes it away from a few. Some People die without water due to dehydration others die because of drinking too much of it due to water intoxication yet it is the most imperative need of a human. It constitutes almost 70% of our body mass about 80% of an infant’s body weight. Water constitutes 70% of the earth’s surface area out of which only 2.5% is fresh water which is required by us to meet our daily needs like drinking, bathing, washing clothes and utensils, cooking, irrigation, leisure, etc the remaining water cannot be used.
What would you do if you had to survive without water? Imagine any number of scenarios where such a situation might occur, whether they involve being stranded in the wilderness or finding yourself in the middle of the desert or even at sea! Water is something we tend to take for granted almost as if it was our birth right to get unlimited access to clean water. Consider that millions of people in impoverished countries around the world are faced with not being able to enjoy access to even water leave alone the fact whether sanitary or polluted.
Living with water scarcity could be a harsh wake-up call for those of us leading more privileged lives, the aforementioned affluent middle-class person. We have high standards of living, but consider that it is a matter of a few decades before we would be out of fresh water which we tend to exploit even after being warned time and again. There are places which are already in a crisis and other places too are getting into it, which now calls for water management by your own will because you’d rather not be forced by water supply cuts just like power cuts.
Many of us are fully aware of Global Warming and its dreadful outcomes and we have started taking measures to reduce its impacts by planting more trees, recycling, reusing, reducing, switching off the lights when we leave the room, etc, which is great but how many of us actually use a bucket to take a bath instead of a shower, or wash clothes and utensils by hand instead of using machines, or even turn of the tap while brushing your teeth, some of us do but not all. As a 21st century issue, fresh water scarcity is ranked second to global warming in an international council for science survey of environmental experts from more than 50 countries. The fact really is that one can live without food and other basic amenities for weeks only on water however you can live only a couple of days without water.
In the end we have to admit the fact that at current rates of consumption by 2025 2/3 rd of the world’s fresh water will be exhausted and add a couple of more years and we would have no water for human consumption even though our world is mostly composed of water. It’s literally NOW or NEVER.
